MINISTER ÖZER: TÜRKİYE RANKS SECOND FOR INCREASING ITS SCORE THE MOST ACCORDING TO PIRLS 2021 RESULTS

Pointing out that Türkiye has increased its score according to the results of The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer said that Türkiye average score according to PIRLS, which was 449 in 2001, has risen to 496 in 2021 with an increase of 47 points. Özer stated that Türkiye ranks second, increasing its score the most. 

The results of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), implemented by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), have been announced. The PIRLS results are available at pirls2021.org.
 
Stating that the PIRLS research was conducted to evaluate the reading comprehension skills and reading habits of 4th grade students and to compare countries, Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer said that Türkiye, which participated in the PIRLS research in 2001, is among the 57 countries that also participated in the PIRLS 2021 after 20 years.  
 
Türkiye ranks second with the highest score
Pointing out that Türkiye has increased its score according to the results of the PIRLS, Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer said that Türkiye average score according to PIRLS, which was 449 in 2001, has risen to 496 in 2021 with an increase of 47 points. Özer stated that Türkiye ranks second, increasing its score the most. Ranking 28th among 35 countries in 2001 PIRLS results, Özer underlined that Türkiye was ranked 39th among 57 countries in the PIRLS 2021 survey.  
 
Girls outperformed the average
Pointing to the success of female students in practice, Özer stated that according to the PIRLS 2021 results, the average score of female students was calculated as 505 and the average score of male students as 488. According to these results, Özer evaluated that female students performed above 500 average points.
 
The percentage of students reaching advanced and higher qualification levels increased
Drawing attention to the rate of increase in students reaching advanced and higher proficiency levels, Minister Özer underlined that according to the results of the research, the rate of students reaching advanced and high proficiency levels was 17 percent in PIRLS 2001 study, while this rate increased to 34 percent in PIRLS 2021 study. Özer said that the results showed that equal opportunities in education have increased in Türkiye and that more students benefited from quality education.
